PRESS RELEASE #2018-072
PROCLAMATION SIGNING FOR THE “3rd ANNUAL GUAM ENVIRONMENTAL PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION MONTH 2018”
The Division of Environmental Health (DEH) of the Department of Public Health and Social Services is pleased to announce that there will be a proclamation signing on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. in the Governor’s Conference Room in Adelup to proclaim the month of September as the “3rd Annual Guam Environmental Public Health Education 2018” (GEPHEM).
Every year, DEH highlights one of the environmental health programs of the Division during the month of September for public awareness and education. This year, DEH will focus on promoting public awareness of swimming pool sanitation and safety to prevent the spread of recreational water illnesses and protect the public from other pool hazards.
The proclamation coincides with the recent completion of the revised, proposed Rules and Regulations Relating to Public Swimming Pools, which DEH developed to update the existing regulations governing pool sanitation. The proposal incorporated recommended requirements of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “Model Aquatic Health Code.” DEH will be scheduling an administrative public hearing on the draft regulations in the coming months to obtain community input.
Activities planned for September include training for swimming pool and spa operators to learn and obtain national credentials and the promotion of sanitary and safe practices for public swimming pools through the regular posting of tips on DEH’s social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter). This year’s GEPHEM theme is “We’re Making a Splash Toward the Model Aquatic Health Code!”
