Central Public Health Laboratory received its Recertification of Compliance
The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) is pleased to announce that the Central Public Health Laboratory (CPHL), under the Bureau of Communicable Disease Control (BCDC), received its recertification of compliance with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA), Public Law 100-578. After an onsite inspection on January 06, 2017, by a representative from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the CPHL received zero deficiencies, ensuring that the results reported by the laboratory are quality assured, reliable, and accurate.
The objective of the CLIA program is to ensure quality laboratory testing. All clinical laboratories must be properly certified to receive Medicare or Medicaid payments. In order for a laboratory to perform testing under CLIA, it must comply with all CLIA requirements, including onsite surveys to determine whether or not a laboratory is in compliance with the applicable regulations as a condition of certification for the CLIA Program.
The CPHL’s impact to the Public has been significant in providing laboratory services, coordinating specimen collection, and performing diagnostic tests for targeted diseases under enhanced syndromic surveillance. In addition to routine testing for communicable diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, influenza, tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis, syphilis, and leptospirosis, the CPHL enhanced its capabilities by implementing detection of Zika, Chikungunya, and dengue virus. Hence, the CPHL continues to play a key role in the prevention of emerging and re-emerging diseases.
